The Last Webinar

Update:  recently launched. Seddon Days Website

After the success of this webinar, I have launched http://seddondays.com/ and also created a free community for people to join to share the Seddon Day experiences. You can join the community here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/SeddonDays/

The recording of the talk ends suddenly as we ran over but the rest of the talk was just reading out peoples comments which was lovely for me to hear  but not something you’d really need.

Mike_and_DovOn June 18th 2015, I told my good friend Dov Gordon that I had been diagnosed with inoperable and incurable cancer. I told him I had weeks to live.

Dov was a rock. We talked for ages on the phone about life and business.

He was surprised at how well I was taking the news and I told him it was because I had no regrets. I’d build a business to give me a life I wanted.

As we talked more, he said I should share my insights. I’d always given to the business community and this would be a perfect last gift. He called it, The Last Webinar.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure.

I’ve got very weak, very quickly. I wasn’t sure I could talk for that long.

I wasn’t even sure if I really had anything useful to say.

But the idea grew on me.

Dov and I talked some more.

Then we started working in earnest on the interview.

And then we did it.

What you can see below is the recording of The Last Webinar.

It’s quite likely the last business related thing I will do.

I enjoyed doing it and I freely give it to you but it’s drained me.

Please do watch the video and please post comments, feedback and questions below.

For as long as I am able, I will try to answer everything that is posted.

Also tell me what changes it has prompted you to make. Let me know that this has made a difference to you.

Please help me raise funds for The Shakespeare Hospice

shakespearehospice

Also, if you did get something from this talk, then I would really value your help in raising money for the charity that is supporting  me to die at home in comfort. They do incredible work and it’s only possible through the generosity of people who donate to them

So please, if you could donate whatever you can to my Just Giving page, then that would be extremely kind of you.

Even if you can’t donate, can you please share this link for me. Share it on Twitter, Facebook, send it to your friends by email. Just help me get it out there. Thank you.

About The Author

Mike Seddon

I launched my first business in 2001 selling software. I started using Adwords to drive traffic to my software business and found I had a talent for it. At the time, I networked a lot locally with other businesses and I found many of them had suffered very bad experiences with various so called “professional” Adwords companies. Quite often I would help these business out of the mess they had got into. I started selling Adwords Management service back in 2006 and I’ve not looked back since. My approach is open and honest. My view is that if someone has to confuse you to win your business then it’s likely they don’t know what they are doing! In 2010, I wrote the book Simply Adwords and shortly after that it was picked up by Amazon here in the UK. Soon it went global to all the other Amazon stores and remains there today. I regularly give talks about Google Adwords and also the other website promotion techniques such as SEO, Social Media and more. In 2011, I was invited by none other than Perry Marshall to speak on Advance Adwords techniques.

Dear Mike, thank you for the wonderful webinar today. Has me thinking and reflecting. I got my Key Questions 1,2,3 and 5 sorted out a few years ago and Key Question 4 is where I need to remember what you said in the webinar.

It feels like letting go of that which is no longer relevant and making space for that which will put wind under my wings as I continue on the Journey.

I’m committing to do my Seddon Day on Thursday, 9th July to reflect more deeply on what you told the attendees and make sure I have my ducks in a row.

Off to share the link to support your chosen cause that will help others who may need it. A big God Bless.

You had me laughing (the in jokes with Dov was appreciated) and close to tears.

It is ten years to the day that I last left corporate life (I had made an escape attempt before and was headhunted by another corporate after a few years), so today was a poignant reminder of WHY I went solo. And all the other questions you posed were apt as they had been part of my creed ever since … I’ve been taking Seddon Days for years.

Anyway, if it is OK with you, I’m going to organise Creating Business Growth volume 2, with a link to your Last Webinar, with all proceeds going to the Shakespeare hospice.

    Enjoy tonight’s whisky.

Still I will find something I can tipple.

    Dear Mike,

This was one of the most inspirational things I have heard. Your webinar really touched me today. The topics are some of the things that I have read in personal development books, but you really bring life and meaning to the key questions. I have been struggling to find my WHY and determining what my definition of success looks like. I have scheduled my first Seddon Session, of a couple hours, for next Wednesday to really think about my WHY. I know this is what has been missing from my life and my business.

My favorite points in my notes (which I have 6 pages), are:
    – Get down to your deepest WHY
    – Make sure you are creating YOUR vision of success, not someone else’s (this is a tough one for me…. separating out other views from my own…working on it)
    – Remembering to enjoy to journey each day
    – Surround yourself with people who help you build your strengths
    – Think and plan and act on the things that need to be done for my loved ones if I was no longer around.

*** Give Yourself Permission to Be Yourself ***
(I’ll be quoting you on this one for a long time to come! .. my new mantra)

    THANK YOU!

    Heather

Thank you Heather for sharing your favourite points.

It’s not easy getting your WHY and your Vision of success right. Chances are you won’t the first time you try but you will start to move closer to it.

It took me some weeks of reflection. A lot of that was done a background thinking whilst I walked or worked in the garden.

Always have a pad nearby though for when those flashes of inspiration occur. I used to call my own mobile phone and leave messages for myself if I had an insight but had nothing to write it down on.

Thank you Mike, Dov, Mike’s wife and to the many others supporting Mike on this stage of his journey. You’ve reminded me of a poem that brought comfort in my childhood which I’ve shared below in hopes it may too bring you comfort… Thank you for seizing the opportunity to share Seddon Days with the world and thus leave a legacy.

The Rose Still Grows Beyond the Wall

Near a shady wall a rose once grew,
Budded and blossomed in God’s free light,
Watered and fed by morning dew,
Shedding its sweetness day and night.

As it grew and blossomed fair and tall,
        Slowly rising to loftier height,
It came to a crevice in the wall,
Through which there shone a beam of light.

Onward it crept with added strength,
With never a thought of fear or pride.
It followed the light through the crevice’s length
And unfolded itself on the other side.

The light, the dew, the broadening view
        Were found the same as they were before;
And it lost itself in beauties new,
Breathing its fragrance more and more.

Shall claim of death cause us to grieve,
And make our courage faint or fail?
Nay! Let us faith and hope receive:
The rose still grows beyond the wall.

        Scattering fragrance far and wide,
Just as it did in days of yore,
Just as it did on the other side,
Just as it will for evermore.

I listened this morning with my husband. We’ve had our own consulting business for four years now and we will be making our Seddon days part of our regular schedule. We all need reminders about what’s important in life. I was especially struck by the part when you said it’s so important that we enjoy the daily journey and not just the destination.

Thanks so much for sharing this valuable time with all of us. Getting to the why is something i’ve been hearing a few times this week, and I always find its not a coincidence when you hear something from multiple sources, its the universe trying to tell you something, so thanks for that, along with the other great questions.

Also appreciate you being so open and honest with us in a time of life that most people try to hide, I think it added a lot of power to the message and inspired people to get moving now!!.

I knew it would be important, but could never have imagined just HOW important. You have truly transformed my outlook in just a short time.

Seddon Day booked for the 2nd Friday of every month. I did ad-hoc “free-range” days, but never had a structure to follow.

And I’m taking my networking to the next level… getting out of the room I’m comfortable in, and going to find a room that scares me… where the excuses I now tell myself will not be accepted. Where I can’t get away with turning up with any less than 100%.

Thank you. And may you and your family have peace.

I knew I wanted to earn ‘enough’ money to give me ‘enough’ time for my children and enjoying life and not money for money’s sake, but already was letting time giving to others eat into time with my children. Life is about memories and quality time with those you love. I agree, life success is to go out happy with who you are and how you spent it. I have pinned your quote up above my desk ‘Gove yourself permission to be yourself’ as this was particularly relevant to me, as were many other points you made. And here is my favourite part of the book – as appreciation for what you gave us during the webinar – and into posterity.

“What is REAL?” asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying side by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room. “Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?”

“Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.”

“Does it hurt?” asked the Rabbit.

“Sometimes,” said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. “When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.”

“Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,” he asked, “or bit by bit?”

“It doesn’t happen all at once,” said the Skin Horse. “You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”

You are so very welcome. My Seddon Day number 1 is in the diary for Sunday 12 July … but, I noticed myself in some spontaneous Seddon moments over the past 2 hours. Hmmm … seems they are as infectious as your humour!

And I have 2 colleagues who will be ambushed into a Seddon Day on Saturday – we’re doing our first mastermind meeting, and the link to your webinar is already in their inbox with the reminder.

Cape Town is rather far from where you are, but I hope its comforting to imagine in your minds eye the spaciousness created by us all connecting across the world via Seddon days. What a great movement to be part of!

    Mike,
I “happened” upon the webinar through an email I received from Dov Gordon’s company. I was drawn to register for it. I was “supposed” to. Your words spoke to me. I give you so much credit…you are an incredibly strong man and it was divine that you were able to give this wonderful gift to all who were fortunate to listen yesterday! I, too, took pages of notes. Some of the key things you said that resonated for me were: Don’t create someone else’s version of success, Give myself permission to just BE MYSELF, and the simplest thing that I loved was…”It’s not about arriving somewhere…it’s how you are every day!” God bless you and your family. I pray God will be near and dear to you. You will be in my prayers!

      Hi Juanita,

      Thank you.

You make an interesting point. I’m actually not religious.

I do have a spiritual side and I used to be a believer in my youth even though my family were not. I used to go to church on my own.

I have found time to reflect upon my faith (or lack of) and it’s throwing up some interesting conversations in my mind.

I respect people who do believe. My own wife is very religious and gains great comfort from her faith.

I’ve also found great comfort in friends and neighbours who have sat and prayed with me.

It’s an interesting mix of emotions I have about the whole question of pray and god.

However, I feel my inner peace really does come from the fact that I have travelled a journey that I wanted to travel and travelled it with people I wanted to share that journey with.

For some people that travel companion is god. Maybe he’s been there with me but I just didn’t see him.

      Blessing to you.

    Dear Mike,

I was touched, emotional, moved by your thoughts shared in the Webinar. The strength of character you must have to have to deliver that talk live whilst in pain is quite humbling.
My journey has been an enormously varied ones, working in many countries, many roles. Driven to make a difference and needing big challenges to stimulate me, I’ve continuously sought knowledge, greater expertise, experience. Always stretching and reaching for the next level. Now, at 60 with my own company for the past 3 years, I do find myself at another cross roads in re-exploring again the Why. And, how will I find a way to really enjoy the next stage of the journey with friends, family. Thank you for reminding me about the need for regular reflection and refocus. Seddon Days is a great reminder for me and value to pass on to others. One of most important things I think you can do in life, is to leave others more inspired, moved, sharing values, focusing on what is most important in our short lives – you’ve done this with your message – you’ve shared a lasting legacy. Take care, enjoy as much as you can – the world is a beautiful place.

I’m also very committed to hospice world and have been very involved for many years of my life both in leadership roles and voluntary support.

Sending positive energy your way, thanks once again for sharing, Kim

Mike, I had no idea I would be listening to you this morning. I received Dov’s email this morning about the recording, and I couldn’t help but take a listen after hearing your story.

When you began discussing Key Question #1 “What is your WHY?” you said something that struck me hard, because I’m falling into the same trap! I’ve been working long hours at my business all the while saying to my children (literally) “This is for you.”

I’ve made up my mind to change my WHY. I truly enjoy what I do and the people I do it for. I love helping businesses figure out how to craft their message to the sometimes chaotic, always passionate world of nonprofit organizations.

I’m going to stop using my love for my family as an excuse to work longer hours instead of investing my time in them. Thank you.

  • Mike and Dov, this webinar is incredibly priceless. Thank you both for following through on a great idea, for those of us who get to hear it now and share our enthusiasm. But perhaps more importantly, for all of those people with whom we’ll be sharing the concept of Seddon Days. It’s a wonderful, viral idea that’s alive and kicking in us now, and will grow up in our friends, family and clients ‘way into the future. What a legacy, Mike. I started crying the moment I heard your voice, as though we have been old friends for a long time. And as I listen to you speaking, I realize it’s not that we’ve been friends in the past, but that we’re becoming friends ‘way into the future. You know, that Great Unknown we don’t remember when we’re here busy with our human lives, but it’s where we came from and we return to, all of us, whenever the time comes. When my time comes, Mike, I will remember you, and the sound of your big heart and your big wisdom. I will know I’m blessed to have had such a bold role model for his transition, and for my own. Whew, what a ride, huh? May you be blessed this day and always, Mike.

Truly one of the greats. God gave you a gift and you chose to share it with the world. I dont know you but by what you have done you have allowed me to want to do more. life is a gift, by you shining your light you have allowed others like me to want to shine mine. I have chosen to write poetry to try get my messages out there. Here is one of my poems. I dedicate it to the life of Mike Seddon

    Its done

My past is who I’ve become.
I’ve lived a life full of fun ,fun,fun,fun…..
Never taking it to heart and always saying
don’t worry I’ll get it done.

Today I sit and look at the time that has passed
and all the tomorrows which are now done.
Now I am stuck trying to figure out
how I’ve allowed myself to become.

Today I stand in front of you outside old but inside new.
I do not let time pass without a fight, cause I know tomorrow
Has no refund. Todays that day ,that day that I change the frame,
the frame that holds the days of yeterdays. Take it with both hands and say that I am great
cause as of today I will not look back at the past and say
How did I let you pass me by again

    Hi Mike,

We’ve never met, but I found out about you through Adrian Harrison who was a mutual client in 2013. I’ve always heard great things about you, and can clearly see why after listening to this gift of a session today.

Reading your post on Perry’s forum was especially gripping as I’ve had a number of friends/family pass in the last few years, ranging from 18 to 88, with far too many under 60.

From seeing life end so much recently, I’ve become very aware of the fleeting nature of time and how much I value it with my wife, young kids, and friends that bring out the best in me.

Having done various forms of Seddon Sessions over the years, I realize I was missing a few key ingredients that you helped fill in the blanks with today:

    1. Don’t make my “Why” about providing for my family since that’s still limited. Changing this helps reframe how I pursue generating revenue.

    2. Redefine what “Success” really is for me and stop following the definition others have for it. I’ve always marched to a different drum, but still find many places where I’m not living in 100% authenticity.

Thanks for overcoming your fears about doing this session and helping me continue to live a more fulfilling life of meaning!
    -Josh

PS – Dov, your quote of “The change you want must be more clear than the path you’re on, otherwise it won’t happen” is a great nugget to continue unlocking the improvements in my life I am pursuing.

      Thank you, Josh.

That is one of the insights I gained while working with one of my early clients.

He owned a uniform manufacturing business. And he spent way too much time moving sacks of cloth around the warehouse.

I realized he did that simply because it was clear to him what needed to be done. But as long as he would continue, nothing would change for him.

My job was to help him clarify what he really needed to be doing – so his business would grow. And make that as clear – if not clearer – than what he already knew how to do.

The reason we struggle to change is because we often just can’t see the change we want with the clarity we see the path we’re on.

A Seddon Day is a great opportunity to reflect and visualize the change we want. When it comes into focus in our minds, we can finally make it happen in our lives.

I do have a question. When figuring out your why.. did you look at your passion/personality/skills, etc.. during this process. Or, did you stick to just focusing on serving like you mentioned in the webinar and didn’t pay too much attention to anything else?

The Why is all those things. It’s what makes you happy that is important.

    Mike,

I had a hard time falling asleep last night as I reflected on my life and what I might do if in Mike’s shoes. I hope to find the courage to share such wisdom with those I love and leave such a mark on this world. You and your loved ones, especially your wife, have been in my thoughts for much of this time…. I was reminded of “Grace” and “Heaven” by Bar Scott…. and the story of Bar singing Grace at Ground Zero surrounded by a few of NYC’s finest and bravest following 9/11. I hope you will find comfort in these songs (they may be found on iTunes or at: http://barscott.com/hearbuy_bars_music/)

May you find comfort from the impact you’ve made and will continue to make on those around the world as your lessons continue to be shared.

-a short word for that brought me much comfort in my recent loss-

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then someone at my side says: “There, she is gone!”

    “Gone where?”

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and she is just as able to bear the load of living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me, not her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says: “There, she is gone!” There are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout: “Here she comes!”

    And that is dying.

Just finished listening here in rural Colorado. Thank you and Godspeed.

I am a musician, songwriter and writer and wonder if you could comment on the commitment we have as artists VS the need we have as business people. I think of myself as a professional but I was deeply struck by your comment about hobby VS business. A reality check for me! Like many artists, I find it hard to give up my dream of being financially successful at the thing I love the most and do best. I will be spending focused time today and tomorrow with questions one and two, four and five. Three has never been a problem. Lucky me!

Thank you for a life well-lived. You’ve given a lot to so many. Sending love to you and Barbara as you move on in your journey.

Oh my gosh…the sobriety that something like this brings is world stopping. To see someone you love get blindsided by something like this is horrible. Six months ago all is fine with no clue of what lurks below and ….Wham!

Heck, Mike is my age and although I know years keep passing by I simply redefine youth. Now a 70 yr old is old. Should I be blessed to make it to 70, I will be speaking of old folks being 90.

But being my age, and yes I’d like to think I still have time to do things,it is this unknowing of how much time we have that makes life so precious. So it is in that light that I’d like to thank Mike and you for offering a perspective that most of us never get to see until it is too late.

Dov, I have to say that I did not know Mike and I just got to meet you. From what I see both of you are a class act. Your family and Mike’s are in my prayers. God Bless

    Hello Mike and Dov,

I just got a chance to listen to this recording, much later than I had intended due to internet problems. I just want to thank you so much for making such an inspirational webinar. I am taking the 5 Questions as more of life lessons, since I don’t have my own business and I am definitely not an entrepreneur!

Those 5 steps are very valuable for anyone to put in practice in their life. I am so easily distracted and sidetracked by the ‘flotsam and jetsam’ of life in general, and it’s easy to lose track of what is most important. Thank you for putting what is most important in focus, in an easy to understand way that deeply resonated with me.

I definitely have some Seddon days upcoming ~ can’t wait!!

The 5 questions you share to reflect on are a priceless road map for the journey of building a business for life. I am now changing my journey by incorporating the “Seddon perspective” with respect to how I am going to begin building a business for my life as opposed to continuing to live life for my business. THANK YOU so much for your words of wisdom. I will pass this on to those around me. May peace be with you.

Mike, God Bless You for your life and following your heart. I took copious notes. Good stuff well said! I mentioned your name and amazing webinar to some American friends of mine who were in England with AmWay “back in the day!” They thought they remembered your name. Were you an IBO back in the day? If so, I would love to contact as many people as possible who were involved with AmWay from Britain. I have some amazing information for them. They should rightly have a bad taste in the mouths. On another note: My wife, Meriel, is from Chandlers Ford in Hampshire. We met in England in 2000 when I was taking an ill-fated networking company into Britain. The networking company imploded but our marriage is the greatest thing to ever happen to both of us. Her whole family are in England so we are moving from our home in Pennsylvania to our home in Hampshire this December. I have been free from a JOB for over 20 years due to my love for our profession. God will certainly say, “Welcome home my true and faithful servant.” When you “cross the bar” call out for a loved one or the master of your life, Jesus Christ. You will be guided with love to the other side. Do not be afraid. Much love and prayers from us in the USA and those around the world. Even though the webinar cuts off early, i think it truly expresses what all listening were all thinking so it was perfect. The last thing Dov read out is “thank you it has been my privilege”.

Mike, you are a true gentlemen and an inspiring soul. You’ve given me some fantastic advice on the Perry Marshall MAstermind forum when I was just starting out, so I know you were a giver. These questions today and your insights have been almost divine timing for me. I was just about to rush into another day of chasing my tail in my inbox responding to emails that really do not matter in the big scheme of things. For some reason I decided to resist getting sucked into barnacles and listen to your webinar. What a gift! You have pierced my heart and my mind to such a huge extent I can’t convey in words. After donating, joining your Facebook group and posting this, I am closing the laptop and off to take my first Seddon Day with just a notebook and pen and some time in a place I love to get to grips with whats truly important!!

Thank you Mike for being so authentic and true. Thank you for all your wonderful insight and setting me on the right path….after getting off course you got me back to my truth again. xx

I, unfortunately, came upon this site just after Mike passed… Hoewver, I am simply overwhelmed by the truthfulness, the love and the character Mike displays. As a business owner who lost his father when I was 18, and with a little sister who was only a year and a half, I have always stressed the incredible need to put family first, almost at “all costs”.

Mike’s ability to push through the “daily noise” with this message will be heard… and his legacy will improve the lives of countless numbers of others, who are caught up on the treadmill of life, pursuing happiness by essentially living miserable existences.

I wish I would have had the opportunity to meet Mike – he comes across as a genuine and warm person who made the choices needed to create and forge a great life.

My condolences and prayers go out to his family, friends and those who were touched by his words.
